Is Jelqing Safe?
Like any exercise, jelqing is safe IF AND WHEN it’s performed properly.
If you perform jelqing according to my instructions, you will not hurt yourself.
On the other hand, if you don’t execute according to this article, you open yourself up to risk.
Small damages could include “rug burn,” by not using enough lube. This is when you damage the skin on the outside, similar to having lots of crazy rough sex.

Don’t focus on the intensity of your jelqing, focus on the consistency. Five consistent workouts are better than one crazy intense one where you pull your dick with the force of 1,000 lbs.
How To Jelq
There are a few things you need to do to make sure you jelq correctly. Make sure you read this before you get started, I don’t want you to tug your dick off and damage the cells.
I’m going to go into excruciating detail, so that you don’t mess up, and get it right the first time.
Read through these instructions not only once. Go through it twice or three times before you start, so you really absorb the process. This will guarantee you build the correct habits that’ll provide long term jelqing success.
Let’s get started.
Literally, warm up your penis. You can do this by taking a hot shower and focusing the water on your dick, or by using a warm washcloth. Take the washcloth, soak it in warm water, then wrap it around your cock. Either method will work, it’s up to personal preference. I like to take a shower because it’s more relaxing.
You have to use lubrication for jelqing. As discussed earlier, it’s possible to jelq dry, if you REALLY want to risk the rug burn, but in my opinion, it’s not worth it at all.
Lube is cheap, and you should keep some on hand anyway for all the sex you have with your wife or girlfriend.
Lubricant helps you comfortably jelq, without damaging the skin on your penis, and also helps you to jelq the entire length of the penis. Without proper lube, you might not be able to move your hand as much, which prevents you from jelqing completely.
I like to use coconut oil. It’s organic, moisturizing, and is GREAT for sex. You can also use store-bought sex lube, vaseline, baby oil, olive oil, or whatever lubricant you usually use.
BUT, do not use shampoo or conditioner. Combine these nasty chemicals with stretching your dick, and you can end up getting nasty burns from the shampoo penetrating your skin.
Plus, getting shampoo in your penis hole is one of the most painful experiences ever. Stay away.
Lubrication helps you jelq longer and more efficiently. Do it!
Execute an Erection
You don’t want to jelq flaccid, but you also don’t want to jelq with a raging boner. If flaccid is 0% and erect is 100%, for jelqing, you should aim to be between 50 and 75% hard. I call this a half chub, in that your penis is halfway hard and slightly chubby, but not throbbing uncontrollably.
If your erection is too low (your penis is too soft) you won’t be forcing enough blood through your shaft to cause your penis to grow.
On the other hand, if your erection is too high and your penis is hard as a rock, there won’t be any room in there to create a muscle expansion. Your cells will already be completely stretched out, so there’s nowhere for them to go. It’s like pulling on a piece of metal, it’s not going to break no matter how hard you pull on it.
Get a Grip
Finally, we’re going to get ready to jelq.
To start, wrap your thumb and pointer finger around the base of your penis, so your hand is in the “okay” sign. Like this:
This is not masturbation, so don’t grip with your entire hand.
Resist the urge to grip your dick like you’re about to masturbate. Jelqing is not jerking off, and if you can’t resist the urge to masturbate, you might be addicted. Don’t worry, I was addicted too, but after a lot of hard work, I quit masturbating for good.
Just like with your erection, you want your grip to be firm, but not strong. An excessively hard grip will pull on your member too much and damage the cells. A soft grab won’t do anything, because your hand will freely move up and down your penis.
Practice more and more, and you’ll find the happy medium that creates results.
Now that you’re in the position, ready to execute, we can officially start the jelqing.
To actually jelq, take your grip, and slooooowwlly move it from the base of your penis all the way to the glans.
You don’t need to jelq your glans because they won’t grow anyway. There’s a ton of nerves in this area and it’s pretty much the same length forever. Don’t risk hurting your precious head.
Take two to three seconds to complete one rep.
Once you get all the way to the glans, you’ve completed your first jelq rep. Congratulations! Now get back to work. We’re just getting started.
If you thought that was it, you’re wrong.
Now that you’ve completed one rep, repeat this over and over until your jelqing time is up (which is 20 minutes).
Once you get your hand to the top of the penis, maximize your jelqing efforts by immediately going to the bottom of the shaft as soon as possible. This will increase the number of reps in your practice, as well as keep your penis under tension, improving your gains.
Here’s a pro tip to bring your jelqing to optimal efficiency: use both hands.
When you complete your rep, switch to the other hand. Use your body as a machine to systematically do more reps. Put one hand over the other to keep the break time low.
The only time you should be taking a break is when your lube dries up. Even in this case, reapply lube as fast as possible to minimize the negative effects of the break. Remember, the more you keep constant tension on your penis, the better your growth will be.
Practice jelqing for 20 minutes. This is the optimal time for jelqing, as I’ll explain more later.
Just like working out, you have to cool down. Cooling down will decrease your risk of injury and increase your recovery. Doing a cool down is essential for this routine since you’ll be jelqing five times a week.
Cool down…by warming up. Do the exact same routine you would do for warming up, by taking a hot shower or using a warm washcloth.
Cooling down might seem wacky, but it’s crucial if you want to minimize penis discolouration.
Yes, I haven’t talked about this yet, but it’s possible for your penis to change colours from jelqing. No, I don’t mean it’ll turn bright purple, but it’s possible you’ll see discolouration. The colour change will be more like bruising, in a dark reddish colour. This depends on your skin colour, but it happens to a lot of guys.
I’ll discuss discolouration in graphic detail later, but for now, know that the cool down is the first line of defence against discolouration.
Stick To A Routine
My recommended jelqing routine is as follows:
20 Minutes A Day – this is the ideal amount of time for jelqing. Anything less, and you won’t have the same returns. Anything more, and you start seeing diminishing returns.
5 Times A Week – it doesn’t matter what days, or if you do it consecutively, but for every 5 days, make sure you take two days off.
There you go, that’s precisely how you should jelq. Stick to this exact routine and you’ll have gains, minimize risk, and have fun too.
Now that I’ve covered the basic jelqing process, I’m going to give you three bonus jelqing techniques.
When you’re jelqing for almost two hours a week (5 sessions of 20 minutes, as prescribed), sometimes it can get…boring. Just like lifting weights in the gym, if you do the same routine for months, you’ll get bored. Next thing you know you’re doing Crossfit and you hurt yourself.
Instead of trying something crazy, here are some jelqing variations to help you stay focused. Use these to spice up your routine, but still remember all the basics of jelqing.
These are especially great if you have a curved penis. With this jelqing variation you jelq primarily to one side of the penis.
Always do mini jelqs to the weaker side of your penis to correct your curve.
This is another great way to correct your penis curve.
I recommend you start this variation with a 70-80% erection level, a little higher than with the normal jelq. You’ll see why you need that extra 10% of erection level in a moment.
How to do a side jelq:
- Start a normal jelq. When you are halfway through a rep, place your other hand at the base of your penis (you need this for support).
- At the same time, curve your jelq to the side.
- When you are near the glans, release your jelq and use your palm to bend the penis slightly sideways (in the direction of the side jelq). This is the reason you need a stronger erection level, because bending the penis at lower levels is not nearly as effective.
- This jelq should last 4-5 seconds. Repeat with your other hand.
Try to do 20 reps of these if you can. If it’s too much for you, start with 10, and then slowly add more.
This is a fun little exercise that nonetheless can take a lot of your time because of the volume included.
Here’s how to do a V Jelq:
- Start with 50-60% erection level.
- Do one normal jelq, but hold your grip just below the glans for 2 seconds. Release the grip before you start a new jelq.
- The next jelq should go up and to the left.
- The one after that should go up and to the right.
- These 3 jelqs are counted as 1 rep.
- Do 30 reps.
That’s a lot of work, so only try this exercise if you have at least half an hour to spare.
We had to address this common question – what happens if you get discolouration?
First of all, no, your penis won’t turn green like an infection. When I say discolouration, I mean you start seeing patches of red, blue, or brown…kind of like a bruise.
Have you ever gotten a hickey? Do you know what happens? Someone (like your girlfriend) sucks on your skin so hard, that the blood cells break below the skin.
Under the right conditions, this can happen when you jelq. You are tugging on your member, and stretching out the cells right, that’s exactly what you’re doing. If you jelq too hard, you will get small bruises on your dick.
Here’s how to prevent discolouration, before it starts happening.
Warm-up – Make sure you warm up, just like we suggest.
Correct grip – Don’t grip too hard, pull too much, or jelq for more than 20 minutes or so. Penis enlargement takes time.
Lubricate – Use enough lube so that you’re stretching, and not hurting, your penis.
Pretty much, if you follow my instructions correctly, you’ll prevent discolouration. If you do get some discolouration, here’s how to fix it.
Rest – Don’t jelq for a few days, especially if your dick is sensitive to touch.
Heal – use a warm washcloth or take longer showers, more often, to tend to your bruises. Take it to the next level and do contrast therapy, switching between cold water and hot water.
Don’t worry – If you do get discolouration, just take it easy for a few days. Your body will bounce back and the bruising will go away.
With the proper jelqing techniques, you’ll have minimal discolouration. Relax, practice safe jelqing, and you won’t have any issues.
Jelqing vs. Stretching – Which Is Better?
Great question. If you’ve read my posts about penis stretching, you know I’m a proponent of stretching…and jelqing. You might be asking yourself, which should I perform, jelqing or stretching?
The answer is, it’s an individual choice, dependent on your genetics. Every man responds to jelqing and stretching differently.
“There are many ways to skin a cat.”
My suggestion is to try both stretching and jelqing, and determine which you want to keep practising.
Perform JUST stretching or jelqing for a month, monitor results, and compare how your body responded to the two techniques.
One thing to keep in mind is that jelqing will provide more girth than stretching. This is reported by many men who I’ve worked with. There’s something about the active “milking” technique that causes the cells to expand in length and width with jelqing.
Stretching will provide more length, but less girth. Try both and see how your penis reacts, and if it’s in line with your goals. If you have a long and narrow dick, jelqing is probably better for you so you can add that girth to really open your girl up.
When you’re testing these two techniques, you should be looking for how much your penis grows, but there’s another variable to consider….enjoyment.
Personally, I see much better gains from jelqing, and I enjoy it much more, so I practice jelqing more than stretching. Do your own experimenting, and make the decision for yourself.
